Impasto Poppies Painting Workshops | Grasby Art Studio Calgary

Create an impasto painting of poppies in acrylic. Across four sessions you will learn a reliable process for integrating and layering paint, pastes and gels to build real, sculptural texture on the canvas.

What each session covers

• Workshop 1 — Build a winning composition, then establish the underpainting and background ready for textured layers.
• Workshop 2 — Use paint, pastes, gels and tools to create your first layer of texture.
• Workshop 3 — Add a second layer of texture and detail to draw attention to key forms and the focal area.
• Workshop 4 — Refine highlights and final details, and finish the painting.

September 30 is Truth & Reconciliation Day — the workshop runs as normal.

Working with Teresa

These intermediate workshops are led by studio founder Teresa Grasby. Teresa takes on the subjects artists find most challenging and shares the efficient process she has developed for them, worked in a loose, expressive style. Most artists use the four sessions to build one large-format canvas — a finished feature wall painting to take home.

• Level: Intermediate — for artists who have completed our Beginners series, or who have equivalent experience
• Duration: 3 hours per workshop
• Class size: 8 artists maximum
• Location: Grasby Art Studio, 6520 Bowness Road NW, Calgary

Supplies

We provide the modelling paste and gel for this workshop. Please bring a basic supply kit of heavy-bodied acrylic and a canvas with you on each workshop day — the three primaries plus black and white, a small palette knife, a disposable palette and a variety of brushes. If you’re missing something, individual supplies, canvases and full kits are at the front desk.
