About Grasby Art Studio

Grasby Art Studio is NW Calgary's creative home — a humble, approachable, 3,000-square-foot art hub at 6520 Bowness Road NW where children, teens, and adults come together to learn, create, and grow as artists. With semi-private instruction and a focus on nurturing creative development, self-expression, and self-esteem, the studio has mentored over 5,000 students of all ages and abilities since opening in 2011.

Our Story

Grasby Art Studio was founded by Calgary artist and entrepreneur Teresa Grasby. What started as a single 600-square-foot classroom with a simple mission — to mentor developing artists, nurture creative development and self-expression, and build confidence and self-esteem — has grown into a thriving creative community. Today the studio encompasses three instruction classrooms, an art supply store, and the Grasby Art Cellar gallery, all under one roof in the heart of Bowness.

Teresa comes from a family of artists and holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography, a Master's in Environmental Design, and a minor in Art from the University of Calgary. Her unique combination of scientific observation and artistic training shapes the studio's teaching philosophy: art is a skill that can be learned, practiced, and developed by anyone willing to try.

What We Offer

Classes & Memberships: Weekly art classes for children, teens, and adults in drawing and painting. Grasby's offers monthly and yearly memberships, but also allows adult artists to set their own schedule through drop-in pass cards sold in 20-hour increments. Adult students may use the studio on their own schedule at supplies-included or supplies-excluded rates.

Workshops: Levelled workshops designed for every stage of your art journey. Beginners can learn the foundations of drawing, watercolour, acrylic, and oil painting. Intermediate artists can develop their skills in landscape, floral, treescape, cityscape, and mountain palette knife techniques.

Summer & Seasonal Camps: Engaging art camps for children and teens during summer, spring break, and other school holidays. A creative, supportive environment where young artists build skills and self-esteem.

Paint Nights & Private Events: Fun, social painting experiences for groups, birthdays, team-building, and special occasions.

Art Supplies & Custom Framing: A curated selection of quality art supplies available in-store, plus professional custom framing services for your finished work.

The Grasby Art Cellar: Our on-site gallery showcasing original paintings by Teresa Grasby and local guest artists. The Art Cellar also hosts live music events and artist celebrations. Browse the gallery collection online at teresagrasby.com.

Our Teaching Philosophy

Grasby Art Studio is humble, approachable, and friendly — a place where you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. Instruction is semi-private, so you receive personal coaching in painting and drawing techniques without the pressure of a large class. Our focus is on nurturing creative development, self-expression, and self-esteem while teaching the art fundamentals needed to achieve a high standard of care in every piece of artwork.

We work with students to create artwork of personal interest while attending to important art fundamentals — value balance, focal area, colour harmony, colour theory, composition, planning, mark-making techniques, and consistency. This approach gives you the tools to develop your own personal style and produce professional results, whether you're picking up a brush for the first time or refining techniques you've practiced for years.

Our instructors — many of them young arts program graduates mentored by Teresa — guide you at your own pace with hands-on coaching. You'll develop real skills and the confidence to call yourself an artist. All students enjoy participation in seasonal art shows showcasing student work — a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your progress and share it with family and friends. We also proudly serve students with disabilities, because art is for everyone.
