Water & Waves Painting Workshops | Grasby Art Studio Calgary

Discover how to capture water's ethereal beauty in these hands-on painting workshops. Whether you are painting serene lakes, flowing streams or dramatic ocean waves, you will learn professional techniques to bring watery scenes to life on canvas. Demonstrations are done in acrylic, with adaptations shown for those working in watercolour or oil.

What You'll Learn

• Light on water: realistic reflections, transparent depths, froth and foam, and shimmering highlights
• Transparent depths: techniques for showing what lies beneath the surface
• Translucent effects: the luminous quality of shallow water
• Rough water: capturing the frothy, explosive power of a breaking wave
• Reflections: painting mirror-like surfaces

Each week you complete one painting focused on a single aspect of water.

In the studio

Moving water is built in layers — the swell, then the break, then the foam. These are the sessions where that order starts to make sense.

Start Any Time

You do not have to begin at week one. Because each session is a self-contained painting, you can join on whichever Saturday suits you and Teresa will bring you up to speed when you arrive.

You are also welcome to book single dates to work on your own project rather than the week's subject. Bring the piece you have underway and Teresa will work with you on it alongside the group.

• $95 — single workshop

Working with Teresa

These intermediate workshops are led by studio founder Teresa Grasby. Teresa takes on the subjects artists find most challenging and shares the efficient process she has developed for them, worked in a loose, expressive style. Most artists use the four sessions to build one large-format canvas — a finished feature wall painting to take home.

• Level: Intermediate — for artists who have completed our Beginners series, or who have equivalent experience

Supplies

We provide all the specialty supplies this workshop needs. Please bring a basic supply kit in your chosen medium, along with a canvas or paper, on each workshop day — the three primaries plus black and white, a small palette knife, a variety of brushes and a disposable palette. Working in watercolour? You won’t need the white or black, and a plastic palette works better than a disposable one. If you’re missing something, individual supplies, canvases and full kits are at the front desk.

1. Choose the full series for all four workshops, or any single date — including a date partway through the series.
