Go beyond the basics with beginner levels 5-8. These workshops suit beginners who have completed Levels 1-4 or have learned some basic acrylic techniques. Levels 5-8 build on the wet, dry and mixed techniques from Levels 1-4 while introducing methods used to render specific subjects: landscapes, floral, water and skies. Take only the levels whose subjects interest you, or take all four for a well-rounded technique base — each level deepens your understanding, expands your techniques and builds your confidence.

What You'll Learn
There are eight levels in all. Levels 1–4 (Part 1) cover the basics; Levels 5–8 (Part 2, this page) go beyond them.
- Colour theory and colour mixing techniques
- Mark-making and layering techniques specific to each subject
- Proper brush handling and palette management
- Art fundamentals: form, composition, perspective, focal area, value balance, colour and mark harmony
Workshop Levels
You will use the wet and dry techniques learned in levels 1-4 and apply them to learn these common subject areas.
- Level 5 — Landscapes | mountains, fields, rocks and trees
- Level 6 — Floral | flowers, still life and plants
- Level 7 — Water | waves, streams, lakes and reflections
- Level 8 — Skies | clouds, sunsets and big prairie skies

- Duration: 3 hours per workshop — four sessions per course
Every course runs four consecutive weeks — no sessions fall on holiday weekends.
Supplies
Supplies
We provide all the specialty supplies each class needs.
You’ll need a basic supply kit and a canvas, and we ask that you bring them with you on workshop days — you’ll use them in every session and for the practice work in between. The recommended supplies are:
- Paints: the three primaries plus black and white — Phthalo Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Quinacridone Red, Titanium White and Black.
- Tools: a small palette knife, a disposable palette, a variety of flat or filbert brushes, and a script/rigger brush.
If you already own these, bring what you have. If you’d like a few items or a full kit, they’re at the front desk on workshop day, along with canvases — our Beginners Acrylic Supply Kit covers the whole list for $88.

- Location: Studio A, Grasby Art Studio, 6520 Bowness Road NW, Calgary
Studio A sits on the main level of our 4,000 sq ft art facility in NW Calgary, Bowness — natural light, and all the demonstration staging and equipment the class needs.
